Promundo's work in Africa was listed as a model project in the publication
Promundo's work in Africa through the Male Norm's Initiative was listed as a model project in the publication - INTEGRATING MULTIPLE GENDER STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE HIV AND AIDS INTERVENTIONS: A COMPENDIUM OF PROGRAMS IN AFRICA. PEPFAR’s Gender Technical Working Group commissioned this compendium of HIV prevention, treatment, and care and support programs in sub-Saharan Africa that are integrating multiple gender strategies into their work. The Male Norms Initiative is a partnership between EngenderHealth and Promundo building on both organizations projects targeting men and boys to promote gender equity (Men As Partners and Program H). The project has concluded in Ethiopia, Namibia and Tanzania and is currently taking place in Mozambique. To download the publication:

Promundo's Program H has also been listed a good and promising program by the US Governmen's Agency for International Development (USAID) on the G3P (Good and Promising Programmatic Practice) Database. Promundo attended the UNDP Global Conference on Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
Policies, Actions and Impact held in Caracas, Venezuela on 21-22 April 2009. Promundo staff co-facilitated the workshop and presented Promundo's experience, as well as that of member organizations in the MenEngage Alliance, in working with men and boys to prevent GBV. The event included over 60 experts from UNDP, civil society and the Venezuelan government, including the Venezuelan Minister for Women and Gender Equality. In the closing ceremony, Winnie Byanyima, the UNDP Gender Unit Director, recognized the importance of working with men and boys to seek to change their attitudes and behaviours related to violence and gender equality. The conference resulted in a list of preliminary conclusions regarding UNDP’s future work in preventing GBV including support for large-scale research and impact evaluations to increase the evidence-base on working to prevent GBV and to strengthen civil society capacity and support regional and national campaigns and networks. Article on youth-led campaign "Entre Nós" published in Exchange magazine
Entre Nós (“Between Us”) is an innovative multi-media campaign to engage youth in critical reflections on rigid ideas
about gender and how they influence their lives and relationships. The campaign was developed and implemented by Promundo and a group of young women and men peer educators known as JPEG (the acronym in Portuguese for Youth for Gender-Equity).

Promundo's Executive Director Gary Barker to join International Center for Research on Women in February 2009. Marcos Nascimento and Christine Ricardo to become new Co-Directors
After 10 years as Promundo’s first Executive Director, Gary Barker will join the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) as its Senior Technical Advisor on Gender, Violence and Rights, based in Washington, DC, USA. Promundo and ICRW have long collaborated on a number of major projects, including the Men and Gender Equality Policy Project. With Gary’s move, we expect these collaborations to continue and expand. Gary will continue to support Promundo by serving on its Board of Directors. He will also continue to serve as co-chair of the Global Symposium on Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Equality (March 2009), and on the Steering Committee of the MenEngage Alliance.
Marcos Nascimento, currently Promundo’s Director of Programs, and Christine Ricardo, Promundo’s Coordinator for Gender, Health and Sexuality, will be taking over as Co-Directors in 2009. They will share between them the roles of overall leadership, fundraising and national and international representation.

“Young Men and HIV Prevention: A Toolkit for Action”
The new publication “Young Men and HIV Prevention: A Toolkit for Action” is now available for download on Promundo’s website. This toolkit serves to reinforce the benefits of working with young men and provides conceptual and practical information on how to design, implement and evaluate HIV/AIDS prevention activities which incorporate a gender perspective and engage young men and relevant stakeholders.
