Commitment to girls and gender equality is essential for social justice.

The Girls and Gender Equality Network is an expression of the national social movement, organized horizontally, non-partisan, which constitutes an autonomous space for articulation, anti-sexist, anti-racist, non-lgbtqiphobic, with a focus on promoting gender equality in Brazil and which promotes, especially, the rights of girls and their active participation in the processes of change to build a society free from violence, discrimination and inequalities.

Bearing in mind that we recognize gender inequality as a structuring element of diverse and multiple historical forms of violence and injustice and we understand that, without the active promotion of gender equality, there will be no sustainable development and justice for all, we believe that this year of elections, it is essential that candidates for the presidency engage with the promotion of girls' rights and gender equality. We know that the rights of women and girls are human rights and several historical legal frameworks guarantee this:

  • The Federal Constitution establishes equality between all people and the absolute priority of the rights of children and adolescents.

  • The Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA) establish children and adolescents as subjects of rights and the principles of universality, non-discrimination and the best interests of children and adolescents.

  • The IV World Conference on Women, Beijing, 1995 - prepared the Beijing Declaration and Platform, which lists 12 priority thematic areas for investment by countries to combat discrimination against women and, among them, lists girls' rights.

  • The Third World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance in Durban 2001, Declaration and Platform that provides for actions aimed at girls, especially in the areas of education, sexual and reproductive rights, combating trafficking, sexual violence and empowerment .

  • The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women establishes the protection of girls against child marriage.

  • The Inter-American Convention to Prevent, Punish and Eradicate Violence against Women, “Convention of Belém Do Pará”, provides provisions related to women that are also applicable to girls.

  • CONANDA resolution 180 provides for equal rights between girls and boys in public policies for the care, protection and defense of children and adolescents.

  • The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 5, establish goals and actions aimed at gender equality and the empowerment of girls and women.
