Young People to End Violence is a project inspired by research that highlights the intergenerational transmission of violence. Several studies confirm that men who have been victims of violence or were present during acts of violence have a greater potential to commit violence against women. According to this perspective, the International Survey on Men and Gender Equality – IMAGES – identifies a strong link between the experiences of violence lived by men during childhood and violence practiced in adult life. The World Health Organization also finds that women who witnessed violence against their mothers as children are more likely to experience violence from a partner later in life.

Youth for the End of Violence is a three-year program that aims to prevent and combat sexual and gender-based violence against girls and women in contexts of high urban violence in Brazil and in post-conflict contexts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Through engaging young people as agents of change, the program is designed to help adolescent boys and girls recover from experiences of violence, while providing critical school-based training in violence prevention. The main objective of the program is to provide adolescents with a greater experience of gender equity and a life free from violence through personal and community transformation, as well as supportive school environments.
Youth to End Violence is led by Promundo in collaboration with Heal Africa and is funded by the United Nations Trust Fund to Eliminate Violence against Women. The program aims to reach adolescent girls and boys who have witnessed and/or experienced violence in their homes to involve them in promoting respect, gender equity and non-violence through group and individual therapy, group education and school campaigns . The initiative also seeks partnerships and carries out political advocacy actions with schools and public policy makers to enable efforts focused on preventing and combating violence more broadly.
Engaging teens, communities, educators, government representatives, and civil society organizations, Youth to End Violence works at multiple levels to prevent violence against women and girls and to respond to the needs of teens who have experienced violence. The program works to provide and increase knowledge about services aimed at the needs of adolescents, as well as to encourage changes and critical reflection in attitudes and behaviors with the aim of preventing future violence.
Youth to End Violence builds on the evidence-based experiences of Promundo and partner organizations in implementing violence prevention against girls and women through group education (Program H and Program M) and therapy (Living Peace), which have been adapted in more than 22 countries. The program also adopts ideas inspired by a rigorously evaluated intervention in the United States (Expect Respect), which offers group support to adolescents who have witnessed or experienced violence, particularly dating violence. These methodologies enabled the creation of Youth to End Violence and are being adapted, tested and implemented in each country in school contexts.
