Extended Paternity Leave – strengthening investment in more equitable policies between men and women in Brazilian companies

Promundo

We at Promundo have been concerned — since always — with the importance of paternal participation in the lives of sons and daughters. In the search for a more egalitarian world and the end of a society guided by machismo, we try to contribute to the formation of generations of father figures who are more concerned and aware of their roles within families.

The challenge of this research — carried out by Promundo in partnership with the Embassy of the Netherlands and the Bernard Van Leer Foundation — is to find solutions that help to expand active and responsible fatherhood, guided by care. The figure of the exclusively provider father must leave the scene. We want a new father figure, more present, careful and attentive to the lives of his children. Only then will he be able to understand the difficulties of tasks related to raising a child and/or teenager in a domestic routine. And this — in our view — is the first step for the father to make a commitment to sharing domestic chores with the women.

To better understand how Brazilian companies view extended paternity leave, we carried out a qualitative study that interviewed 45 people on the subject, from large, medium and small organizations. Management and management leaders, Human Resources professionals, and workers from various technical areas. The main objective is to provide guidance to the business sector, public bodies and governments to build gender equality policies capable of strengthening effectively active fatherhood. It is also by example that we want to motivate other actors to get involved in this issue. Understanding the practice of institutions that adopt expanded paternity leave helps pave the way for other companies to engage in the issue. Knowing the gains of these companies — with more productive professionals and greater gender equality in their organization chart — is also our objective.
