In 2022, a Human Rights and Photography project was developed, offered by Promundo, within the scope of Jovens Pelo Fim da Violência. The course was aimed at teenagers and young people from the favelas of Morro dos Prazeres, Cerro Corá and other nearby communities.
The course resulted in the exhibition “Imagens de Dentro”, which will have a catalog assembled from photographs taken by the young participants themselves. In addition to technical photography classes, improving knowledge in this sense, there were also intense thematic exchanges, in an immersive and collective process, based on attentive listening from both educators and students.
The idea of the course was to create a network of popular photographers, who can create their own narratives through their experiences and social background, seeking autonomy and protagonism through photographic production. The course connects to Promundo's existing methodologies, already used in other contexts, and which work on racial equity, gender equity and female empowerment, masculinities, fatherhood and the perspective from childhood, in addition to other similar themes.
Some of the participants highlighted, in the behind-the-scenes video, that they intend to continue in the world of photography and that their experiences were given a new meaning and validated by them, through the collective process of the course they took over the course of a few months. This experience not only allowed young people to go through a process of self-knowledge, but, above all, to have a greater recognition of empowerment through the art produced by themselves. Themes such as gender-based violence, based on the course and the photographs, are problematized and questioned by the participating photographers, seeking a paradigm shift based on their perspectives.
Thus, Promundo reaffirms its commitment to gender equity and the redefinition of masculinities, proposing collective and authorial processes that can bring about changes in the daily lives of young people and adolescents. We invite you to learn more about the artists that make up the exhibition and their work! The exhibition opens today, January 21, 2022, is curated by Dayana Gomes Sabany and Thais Alvarenga and is available at Centro Municipal Parque das Ruínas, with free entry, until February 18, 2022.
